Hop Tree (Ptelea) - 3 Gallon Pot
A highly adaptable and attractive North American Native small tree, Ptelea trifoliata, commonly known as the Hop Tree, thrives in moist or dry soils when established, and full sun or mostly shade, which makes it an excellent choice for woodland gardens. In its native habitat, it is found growing on rocky slopes, in river valleys, savannas, thickets, and woodlands. It reaches 15 to 20 feet tall and equally as wide, forming a rounded canopy clothed in lush, dark green, trifoliate leaves that turn a lovely yellow in fall. In late spring or early summer, it produces abundant clusters of greenish-white flowers that attract butterflies and beneficial pollinators. It is an important host plant for the Giant Swallowtail caterpillar. Perhaps the most interesting attraction is the abundant clusters of round, quarter-size, wafer-like samaras, a one-seeded, winged fruit. Homebrewers might be interested to know that the fruit has been used as a substitute for hops. Get all the details below
