While many other online plant nurseries have gone to shipping smaller plants in smaller pots, which are much more difficult to care for and come with a much lower survivability rate, Wilson Bros Gardens ships larger, high-quality nursery and garden center grade plants that are ready upon arrival to plant and thrive for years to come in your landscape - Guaranteed.
There are many reasons why Wilson Bros Gardens specializes in growing and shipping only larger size ornamental outdoor plants and trees in larger size nursery pots.
Most important to us is that we want our customers to have the highest degree of success with their landscape plantings. We do that in many ways, including providing lots of plant-specific, expert planting and care advice on every plant page in the website, and in our Advice blog. But success with growing plants in the landscape really starts with providing our customers with a larger, "landscape ready" plant.
At Wilson Bros Gardens, we consider ourselves the growers and our highly valued customers as the landscapers, and our number one goal is your success. Therefore, we see it as our job...not yours...to actually grow the plants from the rooted cutting stage to a landscape-ready size plant with a much larger root system in a pot of 1 to 5 gallons in size.
The smaller plants that many other online nurseries offer in 2 to 4 inch half-pint to pint size pots, what we nurserymen call “liners,” simply aren't ready for life in the great outdoors, and this is why we don't see professional landscape contractors planting them in their customers landscapes. When a pint-size liner plant is planted directly in the ground the odds of long term survival greatly decrease. A few days of heavy rain resulting in soggy soil and the little plants will most likely develop root rot or other deadly plant diseases. One hot and dry day without water and the plants will dry up and likely die. Needless to say, when this happens you will have wasted your money, not too mention the time and effort you expended in planting and care.
When growing our plants, we transplant those little pint-size plants (liners) into 1 to 5 gallon size nursery pots and then grow them in a controlled environment for 12 to 24 months or more where soil moisture, light and other conditions can be closely monitored and adjusted as necessary until the plants roots have completely filled the soil in the pot and are then ready to plant in the ground. The end result with our larger size plants is that there is a substantial increase in survivability rate while requiring less attention to care on your part.
Bottom line, when it comes to plants, you get what you pay for. Thing is, many online nurseries are selling their little liner plants for as much if not more than the price you pay for our much larger plants!
