The Key Lime is a wonderful small citrus tree that can be grown year round outdoors in USDA Zones 9b-11 or in containers that can be moved indoors during winter in climates where freezing temperatures occur. It reaches maybe 12 feet tall and equally as wide when grown outdoors in the ground, or maybe one-third to half that size when growing in containers, depending on the size of the pot. From spring through early fall it features wonderfully fragrant and showy white to soft pink flowers that are followed by very aromatic, juicy, 3-inch diameter green fruits that turn to a soft yellow when ripe. The flowers have both male and female parts so you only need one tree to produce fruit. Both the flowers and fruits stand out nicely against glossy, elliptical to oblong evergreen leaves similar to the those of the orange tree and fragrant when crushed. The juice of a key lime is very tart so it's not usually eaten fresh. Instead, its juice is most often used in very sweet desserts, such as key lime pie, where its bitterness balances the sweetness of sugar.
