Woolly Fern (Cheilianthes linosa) - 1 Gallon Pot
Unlike most woodland ferns that need shade and moist soil, the Woolly Fern, Cheilianthes linosa, is a North American native that will thrive in sun or shade and moist or dry soil. In the wild it occurs in dry woodland areas and rocky outcrops where the soil is loose, gritty and well-drained. That said the foliage may curl in dry summer conditions but just give it a drink of water and it'll perk right back up. It is a small, very attractive fern, with upright and arching blue-green stems and fronds covered in hairs, which gives it its "woolly" appearance, hence the common name. It's these hairs that help regulate heat and collect moisture from the air. New fronds emerge almost white in color and very soft and feathery. Spreading slowly by creeping rhizomes, the soft-textured clump might reach a foot tall and 18 inches or so wide making it a fine selection for small garden spaces or containers, in groupings where space allows, in cracks and crevices, or under trees where a good amount of sunlight shines through. Just make sure to plant this beauty where the soil is well-drained as the Woolly Fern does not like wet feet! Get all the details below
