The needles emerge a neon green in spring maturing to medium green through summer then turning to unique and outstanding orange shades with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. Unlike most other coniferous trees that retain their foliage through winter, bald cypresses loose their needles to show off their reddish-brown exfoliating bark. At 15 to 20 feet tall and 15 feet or so wide at maturity, the irregular weeping habit ensures that no two trees will be identical, making for a unique specimen in sunny landscape borders or around patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces.
