Special Attributes

Snowcap Indian Hawthorne is a dense, mounding evergreen shrub with large, disease resistant dark green foliage that changes to an attractive, burgundy-red during the cool season. In spring, abundant clusters of pink flower buds open to pale pink flowers which fade to white. As with other Indian Hawthorne varieties, the flowers are followed by attractive, small blue-black fruits the birds will enjoy.

We've been testing this one out in our own gardens since early 2016 and, considering all the rain and humidity we've had, it has held up great. Over the course of a year and a half the shrubs have almost doubled in size. It keeps it's low, dense form with no pruning or shearing and has tolerated temperatures below 15 degrees F with no damage at all to the plants.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a mound 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 feet or so wide, Snowcap Indian Hawthorne is an ideal selection for use as an accent, in groupings or as a low-maintenance hedge in home foundation plantings and shrub borders. It also serves well as a colorful mass planting for erosion control on slopes and embankments. Can be grown in containers but likes growing in the ground better. Great for bird gardens!

Spacing: 4' for solid hedge; 8' for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Indian Hawthorne are very easy to grow in moist but well-drained soils of average fertility in full sun to part shade. Morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves. As with so many other ornamental shrubs, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause root rot and other harmful plant diseases. When established Indian Hawthorne are exceptionally drought tolerant. That said, during prolonged periods of summer drought established plants will appreciate an occasional deep soaking. Does not require pruning to maintain its naturally dense form.
