Black Lace Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) - 5 Gallon Pot
A very sophisticated flowering shrub, the Black Lace Elderberry is a dramatic focal point in the landscape. Given its lacy, deep purple-black leaves, one could easily mistake this shrub for a lace-leaf Japanese Maple. However, they'd wonder what the heck is going on when its large and very pretty domed clusters of lemon-scented, soft pink flowers appear in late spring to early summer. The flowers contrast beautifully with the dark foliage and the butterflies love them too. When pollinated with a different variety of Elderberry, dark purple berries form that are great for making jam or elderberry wine, or you can leave them for the birds to enjoy. Unlike many Japanese Maples, this beauty will thrive in full sun, and part shade too. You might be happy to know that the deer turn their nose up to it, its cold hardy to -30F, and drought tolerant when well established. Though it will reach 6 to 8 feet tall and wide when left to grow naturally, it can be pruned annually to maintain a smaller size or to remove lower branches to form a highly attractive small tree. An easy-to-grow superstar specimen in the landscape! Get all the details below
