Alpine Currant (Ribes alpinum) - 1 Gallon Pot
Extremely cold hardy to -50F, and very adaptable and easy to grow, the Alpine Currant is a dense, mound-forming shrub perfect as an accent in the landscape or for a nearly indestructible but attractive natural or clipped formal hedge. Textured, trilobed glossy leaves emerge light green turning to dark green by summer and then to yellow in fall. Greenish-yellow flowers, which the beneficial pollinators will thank you for, are followed by abundant red berries the birds will then appreciate. The berries are edible and packed with antioxidants, but are quite bland. Nothing a dose of sweetener can't fix. The shrub grows naturally to 6 feet tall and wide however can be trimmed as desired to form a tight hedge to 3 to 5 feet tall. With high tolerance to extreme cold temperatures, high drought tolerance to drought when established, and thriving in full full sun to shade, this is a shrub anyone who gardens in USDA Zones 2 to 7 can grow!
