Tiger Eyes Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina) - 5 Gallon Pot
Staghorn Sumac, scientifically known as Rhus typhina, is an exotic looking but very hardy North American native with a tropical look and feel. 'Tiger Eyes' is a dwarf form that takes Staghorn Sumac to a whole new level with a more compact habit to only 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, and brilliant golden leaves. The deeply-cut, almost lacy leaves emerge a lively chartreuse with red veins quickly turning to a vibrant yellow that holds through the summer. Fuzzy-looking, purplish-pink stems contrast beautifully with lemony foliage. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the foliage turns to brilliant scarlet-orange layered over the yellow, for an impressive, luminous show. As if that's not enough, panicles of chartreuse color flowers appear in summer that are followed by velvety, reddish bunches of berries that persist through the winter to feed the birds. Tiger Eyes can be grown as a large mounding shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree. Either way, its bold architectural quality makes it an interesting and eye-catching focal point rivaling Japanese maples. Get all the details below!
