Special Attributes

Red Rooster Carex, also known as Sedge, is a grass-like perennial plant that features attractive thin leathery blades with reddish-bronze color. Its long, fine textured linear foliage emerges erect, and begins to arch over time, finally curling at the tips when mature. An outstanding and unique color and texture in garden beds or containers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright arching clump to 24 inches tall and wide, Red Rooster Carex is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or mass plantings in landscape borders and home foundation plantings, or as a border along walkways and paths or around patios. Very nice as a solo in containers or a centerpiece in combination container gardens.  in container gardens or to add unique color and texture just about anywhere in the garden that gets full sun or part sun. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, rock gardens and near garden ponds and other water features.

Spacing: 18 inches apart for mass plantings or solid border edging; 36 inches or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Red Rooster Carex is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to part sun and like full sun. It's beneficial to incorporate a soil amendment when planting is sand, clay or silt. Constantly soggy soil or standing water can be problematic with this sedge. No pruning necessary though plants can be groomed or cut back by two-thirds their height after winter.
