In spring, foliage emerges a handsome blue-green but then quickly begins to turn a deep wine-red by summer. The foliage turns a deep shade of tan for the winter season.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Cheyenne Sky Switch Grass provides fine texture and color in the landscape. Growing 3 feet tall and about 18 inches wide, it is excellent for use as a vertical accent, as a hedge, and in groupings or mass plantings in sunny landscape borders. Also effective as a background or centerpiece in perennial borders, bird and wildlife gardens, native plant gardens, prairies, meadows or naturalized areas. Because it tolerates a constantly moist it's also an excellent choice for water gardens, bog gardens and along ponds.

Spacing:  18 inches apart for mass plantings; 4 feet or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

A North American native grass, Switch Grass are very easy to grow in a wide range of soil, even clay, sandy and dry soils, though they prefer the soil to be moist. They don't like an organically rich soil so there's no need to add compost or humus to the native soil when planting. Switch Grass grow, best in full sun but will tolerate some light shade. Switch grass is generally noted for its stiff, columnar form, and typically retains its vertical shape throughout the growing season. That said, too much shade and plants might become floppy. Maintenance is minimal. Cut clumps back to the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
