May Apple (Podophyllum peltatum) - 1 Gallon Pot
An easily grown North American native flowering perennial plant that prefers life on the shady side, the May Apple is one of the first plants to emerge in the spring. Its common name refers to its May bloom time and apple blossom-like flower. Slowly spreading by rhizomes to form a dense and lush patch or colony; each plant has only one to two leaves and one single flower. The leaves are folded as the stem rises from the ground in spring; however, once the stem reaches its maximum height of 12 to 18 inches, the leaf magically unfolds like an umbrella with deeply divided lobes. In our north-central Georgia gardens, from April to May, its showy, nodding, apple-blossom-like, white solitary flower in the axil of the leaves is sure to attract beneficial pollinators. Following the flower is an edible green fruit that ripens to yellow and is about the size of a small lemon. Before harvesting and ingesting the fruits from this or any other wild plant you're unfamiliar with, we suggest doing some thorough research. The plant goes dormant in the summer, and the foliage disappears, so don't be alarmed when this happens. It grows best in a shady woodland setting in moist, humus-rich, acidic, sandy to loamy soils, but is quite drought tolerant when established. You might be happy to know the deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it. Get all the details below
