Northern Bayberry (Wax Myrtle) - 1 Gallon Pot
Myrica pensylvanica, commonly called Northern Bayberry or Candleberry, is a handsome, cold-hardy North American native shrub related to and similar in appearance to the Southern Wax Myrtle. The leathery, glossy, gray-green leaves are aromatic, emitting a bayberry candle fragrance when crushed. Inconspicuous flowers are produced in mid-spring on 1-inch-long catkins that are followed on female plants by attractive clusters of small, blue-gray berries that appear in fall, persisting throughout the winter. The berries are useful in making bayberry candles, soaps, and sealing wax. Birds will appreciate and enjoy feeding on the berries. It also attracts butterflies and is a larval host to the Columbia silkmoth. Highly adaptable and easy to grow, it thrives in full sun to part shade and tolerates periodic drought and wet soil, poor soil, high winds, and salt spray. You might be happy to know that deer and rabbits turn their nose to it. Excellent as a clipped or natural hedge and soil stabilizer on slopes. Get all the details below
