Cape Sundew Plant (Drosera) - 1 Gallon Pot
If you've been interested in growing carnivorous plants that trap and feed on insects such as flies, Drosera capensis, commonly called Cape Sundew, is a good one to start with, as it's very easy to grow. Though it thrives in marshes, stream banks, seeps, and other moist areas in its native habitat in the Cape region of South Africa, it is difficult to replicate the conditions it needs, so it is best grown here in the US in pots, planters, and other containers, whether outdoors or indoors. It forms a rosette to about 6 inches tall and wide, with a short and stout 1-inch high trunk from which emerge 2-inch-long leaf stalks and 2-inch-long, narrow, oblong, linear blades that are covered in sticky, fiber optic-like red hairs, which it uses to capture insects. From late spring to early fall, 6 to 12-inch-tall stems rise above the foliage bearing pretty, 1-inch-wide, 5-petaled flowers in loose racemes. Cape Sundew is sure to be a captivating conversation piece! Get all the details below
