Western Mayhaw Tree - 3 Gallon Pot
Contrary to its name, Crataegus opaca, commonly known as the Western Mayhaw Tree, is native to the Southeast and Mid-South, from Alabama to Texas, which is considered a western state. It's most known and adored for its cranberry-sized, edible, tasty red berries. You might have heard of or eaten Mayhaw jelly, which has been a delicacy in the Southeast for generations. The berries can be eaten fresh or dried, and are highly prized for making fine jellies, preserves, and syrups. The fruit has a pleasant, slightly acidic flavor. It is a self-fertile tree, so you only have to plant one to get fruit. It is a small tree, ranging from 15 to 30 feet tall and 10 to 20 feet wide when fully grown, with branches clothed in oblong, dark olive-green leaves. It prefers life on the moist to wet side, making it a perfect choice for areas in the landscape where the soil tends not to dry out; however, it will also thrive in average garden soil. In the spring, abundant clusters of pretty, 5-petaled, fragrant white flowers, similar to apple blossoms, cover the stems. In May, following the flowers, the cranberry-like red fruits appear in equal abundance. Get all the details below
