A rare and totally unique flowering Dogwood like no other, Cornus wilsoniana, commonly called the Ghost Dogwood, is a beautiful small tree adored for its bark, flowers, foliage, berries and form. Perhaps its most outstanding feature is the bark, which starts out a mosaic of light grey, green and light brown shades but peels with age to reveal the ghost white underbark rivaling any white birch. Elongated, pointed, lustrous grey-green leaves really contrast wonderfully and set off the bark. In mid to late spring abundant showy clusters of tiny, cross-shaped white flowers are yet another beautiful feature that the butterflies will enjoy as well. Following the flowers are abundant clusters of small black berries the birds will enjoy from late summer well into the fall. The tree can range in size from 25 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 30 feet wide, depending on climate and pruning. An annual pruning in late winter can be performed to maintain a smaller tree where space might be limited. Spring flowers, late summer to early fall fruits, ghost-white bark, and distinctive branching give this dogwood year round interest in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders or around patios and other outdoor living spaces.
