Mockernut Hickory Tree (Carya Tomentosa) - 3 Pack of 1.5 Quart Pots
A very easy-to-grow and long-lived native tree to over 200 years old that provides food for wildlife, shade and color in the landscape, the Mockernut Hickory is tall and statuesque beauty growing 60 to 80 feet tall with a dense rounded canopy 40 to 60 feet wide. It is a stiff tree that doesn't move much, even in strong winds, which makes it a safer choice as a shade tree around the home and other buildings. It is native to forested areas from wet bottom lands to upland dry sites in the eastern and central U.S. so is also great for reforestation and reclamation projects. Its highly attractive compound leaves can be 10 to 20 inches long containing 5 to 7 ovate leaflets that are 3 to 5 inches long. The foliage turns an outstanding golden yellow in fall. It produces nuts that are edible but notoriously hard to remove from the husk, hence the name mockernut. The handsome bark of both young and old trees exhibit smooth, rounded interlacing ridges with shallow furrows. A super-hardy and long-lived native tree that deserves a spot in every landscape that can accommodate its size. Get all the details below
