Forming an attractive upright clump of sword-like grey-green leaves, this unique and hardy perennial plant looks much like an Iris...that is until it blooms. From early to mid summer thin stems rise well above the 18 inch high foliage to a height of 24 inches bearing exotic, lily-like flowers with 6 flaring petals in shades of orange with prominent red spots, hence the other common name of Leopard Lily. The flowers then give way to pear-shaped seed pods that when dry open to reveal a dense cluster of black seeds which look just like a blackberry, hence the common name. The seeds remain on the plant for months providing winter interest and are excellent for cutting and use in dried floral arrangements. Very easy to grow and low-maintenance, the Blackberry Lily likes all the sun you can give it, will tolerate moist or dry soil and is cold hardy to -30F and heat hardy all the way to Miami.
