Jindai Tatarian Aster - 1 Gallon Pot
A late flowering selection discovered at the Jin Dai Botanical Gardens in Tokyo Japan, 'Jindai' is a compact Tatarian Aster sporting both bold foliage and flower color. Towards the base of the plant are unusually large, paddle-like deep green leaves up to 2 feet long and 6 inches wide becoming smaller on up the stem. These larger leaves provide a bold backdrop in landscape and garden borders. In late summer to early fall numerous flower stalks rising to 4 or 5 feet tall are covered with clusters of 1-inch diameter daisy-like flowers having lavender-blue petals surrounding a bright golden eye. The flowering period is later than others and will often continue providing brilliant color and pollen for the late season butterflies and beneficial pollinators to frost. Many species of birds will enjoy the seeds. To bring the beauty indoors, cut a few of the taller flowering stems for a fresh bouquet. Jindai thrives in moist to wet but well-drained soil and all the sun you can give it. This cultivar is shorter than the species and less likely to require staking, and you might also be happy to know the deer won't bother it. Get all the details below
