Dwarf Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo 'Compacta') - 1 Gallon Pot
The Dwarf Strawberry Tree is a handsome evergreen shrub that can also be trained to form a highly attractive multi or single trunk tree maturing up to 12 feet tall and 10 feet wide with a rounded form. It is clothed in leathery, rich dark green leaves that contrast nicely with coppery color flaking bark on the branches. In late fall to early winter abundant clusters of white bell-shaped flowers resembling those of Pieris are followed by edible strawberry-like fruits, which are best for making jams and wine. The fruits start out green in color and over a one year period transition to yellow and finally red, at which time they are ready to pick and eat, or just leave them on the plant for the birds to enjoy. Since the ripening process takes a year, what's really neat is how the fruits are ripening at the same time the plant is flowering again. Drought and salt tolerant, the Dwarf Strawberry Tree is ideal for use as a specimen or hedge in climates with hot and dry summers and mild winters. Also excellent for coastal gardens. USDA Zones 7a-9b. Get all the details below
