Issai Hardy Kiwi Vine - 5 Gallon Pot
'Issai' is an extremely cold hardy and more well-behaved Kiwi Vine with a smaller stature than other varieties and sweeter tasting fruits. It can tolerate cold temperatures down to -20F as far north as USDA Zone 5 and we hear that some folks have had success in Zone 4. Lush, tropical looking foliage on vigorous vines might reach 10 to 15 feet tall and maybe 5 or so feet wide, making it a good fit for smaller spaces growing on a fence, arch, pergola or sturdy pole. It can even be grown in a container, albeit a fairly large one to accommodate the vine over the long term. But the attributes don't stop there. Issai is a self-fertile cultivar, which means you only need one plant to produce abundant fruit that can be harvested from late summer to early fall. Following the fragrant flowers that appear in early summer, the smooth-skinned, fuzz-less green fruits are ready for harvest by late summer to early fall, and can be eaten skin and all with a taste similar to other kiwis but sweeter and kinder to the tongue. Fruits are produced on vines 2 years or older and a mature vine can produce 50 pounds or more of fruit per year. After the kiwis ripen in the fall, they stay good for a long time on the vine or can be harvested and stored for a month or more. Even if Issai Kiwi didn't bear fruit it would be worthy just for its lush foliage and the texture it provides in landscape. The fruits are a bonus! Get all the details below
