Black Cohosh (Actaea racemosa) - 1 Gallon Pot
A fragrant fall beauty that likes life on the shady to partially shady side, Black Cohosh is a regal North American native perennial that adds sensory appeal and a strong vertical accent to the garden. It forms a 3 to 4-foot tall fountain of deep green, healthy, fern-like leaves from which tall stems rise up to 2 feet above the foliage, topped with 12 to 24-inch long candle-like racemes of wonderfully fragrant white flowers the summer-season butterflies and hummingbirds will appreciate. The aroma is a sweet blend of honey and jasmine with just a hint of vanilla. Earlier to bloom than other species, the flowers start coming in early to mid-summer (depending on location and climate) and continue for several weeks or more. Happiest in consistently moist, humus-enriched soil and bright shade, Black Cohosh is a carefree and low-maintenance elegant perennial for adding architectural height, wonderful color, and summer bloom to a consistently moist and shady to partially shaded part of the border or garden in USDA Zones 3-8. Large and bush-like, this one is well suited to naturalizing large shady areas. Get all the details below
