Sugar Maple Tree (Acer saccharum) - 1 Gallon Pot
Very easy to grow and long-lived, and one of the trees which is most responsible for giving New England its reputation for spectacular fall color, Acer saccharum, commonly known as the Sugar Maple, is a North American native tree that typically grows in a broad, oval shape from 50 to 80 feet tall and 30 or more feet wide, making it a fine selection for a shade tree. It's medium green leaves throughout the warm season turn to brilliant shades of gold to orange in fall. Native Americans taught the early colonists how to tap these trees to make maple syrup. The bark is smooth when young becoming shaggy with age. Its straight, central trunk, wide-spreading branches, and pointed crown are all lovely landscape characteristics, but its most prominent feature of course is the amazing fall color!
