Professor Kingo, also known as Miaotai, is a rare, absolutely beautiful, yet tough Maple tree that is sure to be a standout focal point in the landscape. We gave it this common name because the original species, Acer miyabe was first discovered in the northern islands of Japan in the 1880s by Professor Kingo. It's also easier for most gardeners to remember and pronounce. Acer miyabei var. miaotaiense is a subspecies discovered and named by a Chinese botanist; it is native to the temperate regions of northern and central China and is now considered endangered. Some botanists treat it as a distinct species, while others consider it a geographic subspecies or variety of Acer miyabei because of their close genetic and physical relationship. They do look very similar, but we've noticed some subtle differences in the leaves and young shoots. Either way, it forms a rounded canopy up to 35 feet high and 25 feet wide, densely clothed in handsome foliage. The attractive, 3-to-5-lobed leaves come in cloud-like bunches, emerging in burgundy-red shades and changing to orange-bronze and yellow, then maturing to medium to dark green in summer. Cool fall temperatures bring glorious bright-to-golden yellow hues that rival Ginkgo trees. Its distinct, gray-brown bark develops an attractive, cork-like, ridged texture with age, adding to its overall appeal, especially during the winter months. It is perfect for adding an Asian touch to sunny or partially shaded landscapes.
