Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, Gracillimus Maiden Grass forms a neat, upright, gracefully arching clump that provides outstanding texture in the landscape. It can be useful as a specimen, in small to large groupings, or as a grassy hedge anywhere in the sunny landscape. This is one grass that we use quite often as an accent in home foundation plantings. It can also be grown as a stand alone or mixed with other plants in large containers and pots.

Companions: In garden beds or containers, we like to combine Maiden Grass with dwarf abelias, dwarf hollies, lantanas, loropetalums (Chinese witchazel), junipers, crape myrtles, upright Japanese maples and other sun-loving plants and trees.

Theme Gardens: If you're looking to create a theme garden Maiden Grass is ideal for use in Asian gardens, bird gardens, container gardens (large), grass gardens, perennial gardens, rock gardens.

Cultural Preferences

Miscanthus grasses are easy to grow in a wide range of soils, from sandy to well-drained clay. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil while establishing themselves, however will tolerate periods of dry soil when established. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. So make sure the planting site is a well-drained one. Plant it in a location that provides full to mostly sun. A little shade is tolerated. Miscanthus grasses are very low-maintenance. Simply cut them back one time a year to just a couple inches above ground in late winter, before ir right when new growth begins to emerge.
