Wine Spritzer Beautyberry
Callicarpa dichotoma 'Shiji Muraski' WINE SPRITZER

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5a-8b  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this beautyberry is not winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Easy to grow, great for housing and feeding birds in winter, excellent for cutting to add to fall floral displays, the Wine Spritzer Beautyberry is one of those "must-have" plants. And you won't have to wait long to see berries on this cultivar as young plants just a year old produce berries!

With its boldly the variegated green, white and pink leaves against deep burgundy-red stems, the Wine Spritzer Beautyberry is a sight to behold. It is a beautiful shrub producing clusters of tiny soft-pink to lavender flowers in late spring followed by abundant clusters of pearl-like, sparkling purple berries that nearly cover the branches.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Wine Spritzer Beautyberry grows in a mound 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. An absolute must for bird gardens, beautyberry is useful in the garden as a specimen, in groupings, or as a very colorful natural hedge. When planted at the top of a retaining wall and loaded with berries, the arching branches will slightly cascade over the top of the wall for a very dramatic effect.

Spacing:  4 feet for solid hedge;  8 feet or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Wine Spritzer Beautyberry is exceptionally easy to grow and care for with no serious insect or disease problems. Deer and other critters don't like it either. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution, thriving well even in inner city environments.

Choose a sunny to partially shaded site for planting. In warmer climates (Zones 7-8), some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons is appreciated.

It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It prefers average to moist conditions however will tolerate periods of dry weather when established.

Maintenance is little to none, requiring no pruning however some gardeners cut it back to the ground in late winter or early spring to control size. Because it blooms on new wood (the current seasons growth), a one-time late winter or early spring pruning doesn't effect flowering or berry production.
