Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.



Special Attributes

A vigorous grower to only 4 to 5 feet tall and wide and a prolific fall bloomer, the William Hunt Camellia features loose peony-form flowers with brilliant deep orchid-pink petals surrounding a cute center button of bright yellow stamens. The dark green foliage provides the perfect backdrop for the stunning flowers. The foliage and flowers are excellent for cutting and displaying indoors in your favorite vase.




Landscape & Garden Uses

A smaller growing Camellia sasanqua with an bushy, rounded habit of growth to about 4 to 5 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, William Lanier Hunt is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a hedge or background plant in landscape borders and is especially nice an accent, hedge, or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As it grows, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small evergreen tree that serve well as a colorful specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to camellia gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors in winter for those who live above USDA Zone 7a, where this variety in not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone

Spacing:  3 to 3.5 feet apart for solid hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants




Cultural Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
