Texas Pink Skullcap / Cherry Skullcap
Scutellaria suffrutescens

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 7a-11 (6?)  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Scuttelaria variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Scutellaria suffrutescens, commonly called Pink Texas Skullcap, Cherry Skullcap, or Texas Rose Mexican Skullcap is a very easy-to-grow perennial that produces loads of cute, rose-pink, snapdragon-like flowers that nearly cover the low, dense mounds of blue-green foliage in spring and then lighter through summer and fall. A dynamite plant that packs a punch of color in the garden!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 inches tall and in a low, dense mound 18 to 24 inches wide, Texas Pink Skullcap is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or container gardens. Also ideal for use in groupings or as a border edger. A fine addition to rock and pond gardens tucked around boulders.

Spacing suggestions: 12-15" for mass planting or solid border; 30 inches apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Pink Texas Skullcap is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist to dry well drained soil of average to low fertility and full sun to part sun. In low deserts this plant prefers some afternoon shade, but does great in full sun at higher elevations. We suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering. When growing in a container make sure to use a pot with a hole(s) at the bottom and a quality potting soil or potting mix, or a 50/50 mix thereof. Maintenance is minimal. In colder areas plants might need a good hard pruning in the spring to remove frost-damaged foliage.
