Special Attributes

A natural beauty, 'Tempelhof'  is a compact version of the Hinoki cypress growing to about 8-10 feet in height with a spread of 4 to 6 feet, depending on pruning. Its dense, oval form produces sprays of solid green foliage with a golden tint on the new growth. Attractive, emerald green foliage holds its color throughout the winter. It lends an extremely fine and delicate texture to the landscape composition which can make it a great focal point specimen on this basis alone. It grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions is long-lived to 70 years or more. Excellent for bonsai.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing somewhat slowly to 8-10 feet tall and 4-6 feet wide in a pyramidal form, the Tempelhof Honoki Cypress is ideal for use as an eyecatching, stand alone specimen or to frame corners in home foundation plantings. Also effective in small groupings or in straight or staggered rows to form a mid-size privacy hedge in landscape borders. It does very well in containers provided the container has a drainage hole(s) at the bottom and a quality potting soil is used. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian themed gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Spacing:  5' for solid hedge; 10' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

The Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress is very easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. It is moderately drought tolerant but will appreciate an occasional watering during prolonged periods of dry weather. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning is required. if you prune it, only trim back the new growth of the current season. Tempelhoff has performed wonderfully here in our Zone 8a gardens in north-central Georgia with no significant negative characteristics.
