Special Attributes

Suziblue is Southern Highbush Blueberry released in 2009 released by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the University of Georgia Agricultural Experiment Stations. Suziblue is vigorous plant and an an early season heavy producer of firm, large , medium to light blue fruits with excellent flavor. Plants are self-pollinating (self-fertile), so there's no need to plant other blueberry varieties for cross pollination or berry production. That said, using a pollinator will result in larger berry size and increased production. For those who love eating blueberries, Suziblue will not disappoint.

Origin

Suziblue was first selected in 2002 at the Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin, GA. from a group of seedlings of the cross, Star X TH-474, planted in a nursery in 1999. Suziblue has been tested as selection TH-730 at multiple sites in middle and south Georgia. In the Griffin location, berry weight of Suziblue has been larger than Star, averaging 2.2 to 2.8 grams per berry compared to 1.5 to 2.2 grams per berry for Star. Suziblue berries grown in Griffin also had a noticeably sweeter flavor than Rebel berries, which have a mild to bland flavor.

Cultural Preferences

Blueberry plants grow best in an acidic (pH of 4.8 to 5.2), organically rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. The more sun the better for best berry production. The shallow, fibrous roots of blueberry plants like a consistently moist but well-drained soil which can be provided by with a layer of organic mulch. Although blueberries are self-fertile, cross-pollination produces the best fruit crop (larger berries and larger yields). Therefore it is best to plant more than one variety that will bloom at the same time. Blueberry season can be extended by planting early, mid-season and late varieties. Make sure to plant two different cultivars/varieties for each season. USDA Zones: 7b-10b  Find Your Zone >
