'Sum and Substance' Hosta Lily
Hosta 'Sum and Substance'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 3a-9b  Find Your Zone

Special Attributes

We've grown and planted a lot of Hosta in our gardens over the years and 'Sum & Substance' has been one of if not the best all-time performers among the golden-leaved cultivars. We're not sure why they didn't call it 'Sun & Substance' because this one has demonstrated very good sun tolerance in our north-central Georgia gardens over the years.

'Sum & Substance' Hosta enormous, golden to chartreuse color leaves (depending on sun exposure) that form large clumps 2 feet tall or more and up to 6 feet wide. As mentioned, this Hosta has very good sun tolerance. In our gardens, it tolerates more sun than any other Hosta we grow. We've grown it in almost full sun and the foliage color becomes more intense with more sun. That said, it grows equally as well in shade or part shade. Lavender flowers in summer appear at the tops of 48" tall flower stems.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a dense mound 30 to 36 inches tall and up to 4 to 5 feet wide, Sum And Substance Hosta is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or massed as a groundcover (deciduous) or as a border along walkways and paths to light up shady to sunny gardens and landscape borders. Sum and Substance has been so reliable and such a strong performer for us that we have no problem at all suggesting it for use as an accent in home foundation plantings. Sum and Substance Hosta makes an impressive container plant and is a great choice for mixed hosta gardens, hummingbird gardens, and yellow color theme gardens.

Spacing:  48 inches for mass plantings; 8 feet for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Sum and Substance Hosta is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and sun or shade. It tolerates more sun than any other Hosta in our gardens.
