Special Attributes

'Crystalina' is dwarf mounding Summersweet (Sweet Pepperbush) growing to only 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide that produces LOADS of sweetly fragrant pure white flowers in summer. The 4 to 6 inch long bottlebrush-like racemes are packed with flowers that smell somewhat like sweet vanilla candy and are irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. The color show continues in fall when the handsome green foliage ignites into brilliant shades of yellow. An exceptionally easy-to-grow, pest and disease free, multi-season shrub you will not regret planting!

'Crystalina' was developed through a breeding program at North Carolina State University. It was selected from a population of seedlings derived from another or our favorite Summersweets: Clethra alnifolia 'Ruby Spice'.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to only 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Crystalina Summersweet is ideal for use in smaller garden spaces. It is especially effective massed or grouped in larger, sunny or shady flowering shrub borders, butterfly and hummingbird gardens. It is one of a few summer-flowering shrubs that will bloom in heavy shade so is an excellent choice for woodland gardens. Also suitable for moist soils along stream banks and around ponds. Plant near a patio or other outdoor living spaces to enjoy the fragrant summer flowers.

Spacing:  2-2.5' for solid hedges; 5'+ for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Summersweets are unique flowering shrubs because they're so versatile; growing and flowering equally as well in sun or shade, in moist to wet soils of any type, including clay, and they tolerate salt spray. They prefer a consistently moist or wet soil. It's best not to allow the soil to dry out completely. Just give them an occasional deep soaking during drought. Clethra is a very easy plant to grow and is free of any pest and disease problems. We've been growing summersweets in our gardens for years and have never seen any serious insect or disease problems. Prune if needed in late winter.
