Southern Lace Hinoki Cypress
Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Southern Lace'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5a-8b  Find Your Zone

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Cypress tree is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, it will need a well-lit indoor location and will need to be transplanted to the landscape when it becomes to large to grow in a container.

Special Attributes

An exceptionally attractive Hinoki Cypress, 'Southern Lace' sports some of the most soft and lacy foliage of any conifer we grow.  It has an open-branched, narrow pyramidal form with gracefully arching branchlets that are sure to please the eye when uses as a focal point specimen, in groupings, or in privacy screen plantings. Though some websites list Southern Lace as "slow growing," we've seen it add 12-24 inches or more a year in height...super-fast for a Hinoki Cypress!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 15-20 feet in height and a width of 6-8 feet at the base, it's graceful look and tall, slender habit, make the Southern Lace Hinoki Cypress ideal for use as a focal point specimen to draw attention, to frame the corners of tall homes and other structures, or arranged in single or staggered rows to form a very attractive privacy screen or buffer. Also suitable for growing in large containers and a natural fit for conifer gardens, rock gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).

Spacing:  6' apart for solid hedges or privacy screens; 12' or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

The Southern Lace Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow in a most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to part sun. It is exceptionally low maintenance, requiring little if any pruning to keep its naturally narrow, pyramidal form.
