Special Attributes

'Snow Chan' is a large growing Camellia that produces an abundance of very large, breathtakingly beautiful peony-form flowers with pristine white petals surrounding a glowing yellow center in late winter and spring. Its lustrous dark-green foliage provides the perfect backdrop for the gorgeous flowers. To enjoy them indoors, display several cuttings in a vase, or use just one flower to float in a bowl of water.

Landscape & Garden Uses

With an upright growth habit to about 10-12 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide, the Snow Chan Camellia can be grown as a large evergreen shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a hedge or background plant, in groupings, or is especially nice as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As the plant grows its lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive and colorful focal point specimen tree for use in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to white color theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers which can be brought indoors for the winter by those who live and garden north of USDA Zone 6b where this cultivar is not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone

Spacing:  6 to 7 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
