Special Attributes

The most cold hardy of the running bamboo, the roots of Snow Bamboo can survive to – 30 F! It is ideal for use as a privacy screen in extremely cold regions as far north as USDA Zone 4a. Also known and sometimes called "nude sheath bamboo," this species has very dark green erect canes covered with lush, bright green foliage that compliments the canes. The cane walls are exceptionally thick with excellent wood qualities. The cane sheath is gray/wine colored with no auricles or oral setae. The new shoots of Snow Bamboo are edible and delicious!

In zone 4, Idaho, we have reports of this species doing great. There is some foliage drop, but new canes have came back even when temps have gone to -30F.

At the Denver Zoo, climate zone 5,  after over 12 years nuda has sized out at an average of 10 feet height with 1/2 inch diameter canes. It will remain evergreen in zone 5 after establishment of the rhizome system.

Cultural Preferences

Snow Bamboo is easy to grow in most any average garden soil in full sun to part shade.

Snow Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of some bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are "shooting," the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or a Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.
