Special Attributes

An ancient variety that is rarely found in the marketplace today, Shrio Karako is one of the Rustican Camellias, commonly know as Snow Camellias, which originated in the higher elevations of Japan where they were insulated from the cold by a snow covering. When the snow melted in spring the evergreen shrubs burst into a mass of color. As a Rustican, Shiro Karako doesn't disappoint. In late winter through early spring, Shiro Karako produces a profusion of anemone form flowers with a row of 6 white outer petals surrounding a mound of white ruffled petaloids with a yellow glow at the center. The flowers stand out magnificently against the dark green leaves. If you are searching for a unique Camellia for your collection, Shiro Karako is a wonderful selection.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a spreading mound 6 to 10 feet tall and wide depending on pruning, the Shiro Karako Camellia is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge or background plant in landscape borders and is especially nice as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to camellia gardens, white theme gardens, Asian gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors during winter by those who garden above USDA Zone 6b, where this variety is not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone

Suggested Spacing:  5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
