Sawthoothed Serratifolia Aucuba
Aucuba japonica 'Serratifolia'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 7a-10b  Find Your Zone >

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Aucuba variety is not winter hardy outdoors, you can enjoy it as a year-round houseplant or in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Aucuba japonica 'Serratifolia', commonly known as Sawtoothed Aucuba, sports attractive shiny, dark evergreen foliage with distinctively longer leaves than are typical on Aucuba. The leaves have coarse tooth-like edges that add a textural, tropical-like element to the shade garden.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5 to 7 feet tall and wide, and thriving in dense shade to part shade, Sawtoothed Aucuba is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in home foundation plantings, under the canopies of large shade trees, and in other shady areas. A fine addition to the tropical look garden, perennial shade gardens, rock gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs). You can also grow this flashy beauty year-round indoors as a houseplant!

Spacing:  4' for solid hedges;  10' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Aucuba are very easy to grow and low maintenance plants tolerant of most any well-drained soil. They thrive in the shadiest of spots, even under the canopies of large trees where grass and many other plants are difficult to grow. That being said, they'll do fine with some morning sun, however hot, direct afternoon sun will scorch the leaves.
