Ruby Loropetalum
Loropetalum chinensis f. rubrum  'Ruby'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 7a-10b  Find Your Zone >

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Loropetalum is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. Requires a well-lit space for overwintering indoors.

Special Attributes

Red to burgundy new growth with vibrant rose pink spring and fall blooms, and a more compact habit than other taller growing varieties, make Ruby Loropetalum one of the top choices for the landscape. It is referred to as the Chinese Fringe Flower or Chang's Ruby and the foliage provides a stunning contrast with its spider-like pink flowers. Mature height is about 4 to 6 feet with an equal spread, depending on pruning. It can be pruned or sheared year-round for a more formal shape or to limit size. Green foliage is more mature and newer growth is purple.  Give your landscape a pop of color with this variety of loropetalum.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing naturally to about 4-6 feet tall and wide, or kept smaller with occasional pruning, Ruby Loropetalum is an ideal choice as an accent, in groupings or mass plantings, or in straight or staggered rows in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. It's low water needs makes it suitable for use in Xeriscape plantings. The year round deep purple foliage contrasts nicely with plants that have yellow, light green, grey or other light colored foliage or flowers. A fine addition to purple-theme color gardens and large containers with a rim diameter of 16 inches or more.

Spacing:  4' for solid hedge;  8' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences
Ruby Loropetalum is very easy to grow in most any average, most but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant Purple Diamond® in a well-drained site. When established, plants are exceptionally drought tolerant, requiring little if any supplemental irrigation. Foliage is more dense in full sun. Requires no pruning, however responds very well to almost any amount, making it an excellent choice for hedges.
