Rhapsody in Pink Crape Myrtle
Lagerstroemia indica  Whit VIII 'Rhapsody in Pink' PP 16616

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 6a-9b (10a?)  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Crape Myrtle variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

'Rhapsody in Pink' is a truly remarkable Crape Myrtle. It is a repeat-blooming Crape Myrtle which tolerates both colder and warmer temperatures, longer lasting periods of drought, and is totally resistant to powdery mildew. Its impressive foliage emerges wine-purple in spring, followed by deep to dark green summer color, and various shades of red, yellow, and orange in fall. Rhapsody in Pink's dark green leaves provide a wonderful backdrop for the elongated clusters of pretty, soft-pink flowers that repeat through all of summer and well in to fall. The bark is gray to brown which exfoliates with age providing winter interest after the leaves drop in mid to late fall.

As mentioned, Rhapsody in Pink is totally resistant to powdery mildew; an unsightly disease which shows up during summer as a white powdery substance that covers the leaves on many other types of crape myrtle.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 10-12 feet tall depending on pruning, and 8-10 feet wide, Rhapsody in Pink is a mid-size Crape Myrtle that is an ideal selection for smaller garden spaces and large containers. It can be grown as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree, making it an excellent choice for use as a focal point specimen or accent in sunny home foundation plantings, landscape borders and islands, to mark or frame entryways, or in medians. Also makes a very colorful hedge and is spectacular in groupings. Whether planted as a specimen or in groupings, this is one fine crape myrtle that is sure to draw lots of attention. A fine addition to pink color theme gardens.

Spacing:  7 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Rhapsody in Pink Crape Myrtle is very easy to grow. It is not picky about soil type provided the soil is well-drained. A moist but well-drained soil of average fertility is preferred. Full sun is preferred and results in heavier flower production. Light shade is tolerated but flowering will be diminished in more shade. Has shown excellent resistance to powdery mildew and is quite drought tolerant when established.
