Red Formosa Azalea
Azalea indica 'Red Formosa'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 7b-10b   Find Your Zone >

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7b, where this Azalea variety is not winter hardy outdoors, you can enjoy growing it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

‘Red Formosa’ is perhaps the least known of the large growing, heat and sun tolerant Southern Indica Hybrid azaleas. We think that makes it special as you won't see them growing in every landscape across the south. Red Formosa produces a profusion of large (3-4 inch), ruffled, striking fuchsia flowers with red freckles in spring. Unlike most azaleas, southern indica hybrids are well known for their ability to tolerate mostly to full sun as well as part sun.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6-8 feet tall and 6 feet wide, Red Formosa Azalea is a perfect choice for groupings, mass plantings, low to medium hedges or an accent in partially shaded landscape borders, woodland gardens, and home foundation plantings. Butterflies love the flowers, and blooming branches serve very well for cutting to create stunning indoor floral arrangements.

Spacing:  3-4'' for solid hedges;  7'+ for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Southern Indica Azaleas are easy to grow. They prefer a moist but well-drained, acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and full sun to part shade. That said, full sun is tolerated however we think they perform and look their best when receiving some filtered sunlight during the hottest part of summer afternoons. When established, plants have good drought tolerance.
