Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Loropetalum variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. Requires a well-lit space for overwintering indoors.

Special Attributes

Red Chocolate Loropetalum displays intense deep wine-purple foliage color throughout all four seasons! In spring, the vibrant, dark-red fringe flowers that nearly cover the foliage are an extra-added bonus. Reblooms sporadically in summer and again in fall. With a mature size of  about 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, and about half that size with occasional pruning or shearing.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing naturally to about 6 to 8 feet tall and wide, or kept smaller with occasional pruning, Red Chocolate Loropetalum is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or in straight or staggered rows as a natural or clipped formal hedge in sunny to partially shaded home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Also nice as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall, and pom pom, pyramid or global topiary. As this Loropetalum grow taller, lower branches can be removed to create an small, multi or single trunk evergreen tree that serves as a highly attractive focal point specimen in the landscape. The year round deep wine-purple foliage contrasts nicely with plants that have yellow, light green, grey or other light colored foliage or flowers. A fine addition to purple or black theme gardens, formal gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedge;  12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Red Chocolate Loropetalum is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Foliage is more dense and flowering more heavy with more sun. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Established plants are exceptionally drought tolerant requiring little if any supplemental irrigation. Requires no pruning however responds very well to almost any amount, which makes it a fine candidate for formal hedges.
