Special Attributes

Pygmy bamboo is a low, vigorous spreader growing from 12 to 24 inches tall and spreads far and wide if allowed. If you have a large shady area you want to cover with attractive green foliage this plant is a great choice for groundcover. It is often used as a groundcover in larger bamboo groves. Great for using between stones around a garden pond or filling large above ground pots, planters and other containers. It's dense foliage does a great job of suppressing weeds. If you want to contain it to a smaller landscape space we suggest using Bamboo Root Barrier or some other method to control its spread.

Cultural Preferences

Pygmy bamboo grows well in most average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. Does not like direct afternoon sun. This species will form large colonies if not controlled. If planted in an area where unlimited spread is not acceptable, underground barriers should be installed to control spread. Can be mowed to the ground every year to stimulate all fresh new growth for the current season.

Pygmy Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads, and this one will spread far and wide if not controlled. This might be a good thing if you intend on using it as a groundcover in a large, shady area, however, if you intend on using it in a small space we suggest the use of  Bamboo Root Barrier to control spread.
