Porcupine Grass
Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5a-9b  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Miscanthus grass variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Miscanthus sinensis 'Strictus', commonly known as porcupine grass, has an upright, columnar habit to 5-6 feet tall with flower stems rising up to 8-9'. It has erect, "porcupine-like" leaf blades that display the characteristic bold yellow stripes of other zebra grass varieties. In mid- to late-summer, reddish-bronze seed "wands" rise above the foliage on sturdy stems. In early fall these open to attractive fluffy plumes that persist through winter. The plumes are great for cutting and use in dried flower arrangements. 'Strictus' is very similar in appearance to M. 'Zebrinus', except 'Zebrinus' foliage arches and has a tendency to flop more from heavy rain or wind.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 5 feet tall with flowers rising to 8 feet, and 3 to 4 feet wide, Porcupine Grass is ideal for use as a vertical accent or grouping in smaller garden spaces, home foundation plantings, and container gardens. Effective in larger groupings or as a natural hedge in larger landscape spaces.

Suggested Spacing:  3' apart for hedges;  10' or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Miscanthus grasses are easy to grow in a wide range of soils, from sandy to well-drained clay and full to mostly sun (6 hours or more direct sunlight per day). They prefer a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility while establishing themselves, however will tolerate periods of dry soil when established. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, so make sure the planting site is a well-drained one. Maintenance is minimal requiring only an annual pruning before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or very early spring. At this time simply cut plants back to just above the ground.
