USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 7a-11  Find Your Zone >

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Podocarpus is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers which can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

The Podocarpus Upright Yew, Podocarpus macrophyllus, also known as the "Buddhist Pine," is an upright growing, oval to columnar shrub with handsome, dark green, needle-like evergreen foliage that provides a unique texture and form in the landscape. Though it grows up to 20 feet in height and 10 feet wide, the Upright Podocarpus responds very well to pruning and is often trimmed into a formal columnar shape as low as 6 to 8 feet in height and 2 to 3 feet wide. You can also train it into very interesting topiary forms such as pom pom.

Landscape & Garden Uses

When trimmed into a tight column the Upright Podocarpus is ideal for use in home foundation plantings to fill narrow spaces or as a narrow hedge or privacy screen where space is limited. When left to grow natural it is ideal for use in privacy screen plantings. You can also train it into very interesting topiary forms such as pom pom or poodle tier. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, formal and topiary gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  3-6 feet for hedges or privacy screens (depending on pruning)

Cultural Preferences

The Upright Podocarpus Yew is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full sun or part shade. It does not like a poorly drained constantly soggy or wet soil and is very drought and heat tolerant when established.
