Panama Red Hibiscus
Hibiscus acetosella 'Panama Red' PP20121

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 9-11  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden above USDA Zone 9a, where this Hibiscus variety is not winter hardy, you be happy to know that it can be grown in containers that can be overwintered indoors and placed back outside when temperatures warm in spring.

Special Attributes

The Panama Red Hibiscus forms a spreading, bushy mound of dark-red to burgundy maple-like leaves that hold their color throughout the season. Prized more for its foliage than it's rare flowers, but you might get lucky and see one from time to time. This one is an annual above USDA Zone 9, however container-grown plants can be overwintered indoors.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, the Panama Red Hibiscus is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings or mass planted in sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. It is also nice in containers, which can be overwintered indoors in USDA Zones above 9a, and as an accent in perennial or annual garden beds where its deep colored foliage serves as a great contrast for other flowering plants, especially those with red, pink, yellow or orange flowers. A fine addition to tropical look gardens and around garden ponds and other bodies of water.

Cultural Preferences

Panama Red Hibiscus is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained moist soil and full sun. Shoots can be pruned if the plant becomes to large for the pot or garden bed it was intended to fill. Water as needed to keep the soil damp to moist. USDA  Zones: 9-11  Find Your Zone
