Otto Luyken Laurel
Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 6a-8b  Find Your Zone >

Special Attributes

The Otto Luyken Laurel is a stately evergreen shrub with glossy, very dark green leaves that give it a polished appearance all year long. Some call Otto Luyken a 'dwarf', giving the impression that it grows to only 3 to 4 feet in height and width, but our long term experience with this plant let us know that without pruning it grows 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet over time. That said, plants can be maintained at about half those dimensions with an annual pruning or two. In spring, loads of fragrant white flower "candles" are very pretty against the dark foliage, adding to the overall appeal of the plant. If you're looking to add an elegant plant to your home foundation planting or landscape border, Otto Luyken Laurel is sure to fit the bill.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an uptight mound 4 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 10 feet wide (depending on pruning), Otto Luyken Luarel is an ideal selection for use as an accent, in groupings or as a natural or formal hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. With the heat and humidity we have here in Georgia (USDA Zone 8a), this plant performs and looks better when provided some shade or filtered sun in the hot mid-afternoon hours. In Zones 6 and 7 we hear it does fine in full to mostly sun.

Spacing: 4 to 5' for solid hedges or mass plantings;  12' for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Otto Luyken Laurel is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and full sun to part shade. Well-drained soil is essential. As with so many other ornamental shrubs, constantly soggy or wet soil can cause problems with the roots. In USDA Zone 8 plants will perform and look their best when provided some shade or filtered sun during the hot, mid-afternoon hours. Here in USDA Zone 8a of Georgia we've had success growing them in almost full shade. In the cooler climates of USDA Zones 6 and 7 plants will tolerate full sun to almost full shade.
