Special Attributes

A self-pollinating cultivar similar to 'Burfordi', the Needlepoint Holly is prized for the abundance of bright, cherry red holly berries it produces and its evergreen glossy deep green foliage. The berries turn red in fall and usually persist through winter.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing upright in a rounded form 6 to 10 feet tall and 5 to 8 wide (depending on pruning), the Needlepoint Holly is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural or formal hedge in landscape borders. It makes for an excellent corner plant to frame homes or other structures. Lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive evergreen tree ideal for use as a focal point specimen in the landscape.

Spacing Recommendations:  6' for solid hedge;  12 + for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

The Needlepoint Holly is exceptionally easy to grow in a wide range of soils that are well-drained soil and of average fertility. grows well in full sun or part shade, however more sun brings more berries. Needlepoint will require little if any pruning, however can be pruned to form semi-formal to formal hedges, or a can be "limbed up' to form a small, attractive tree. Note that heavy pruning after spring flowering may reduces berries.
