Miss Scarlett Florida Anise
Illicium floridanum Miss Scarlett

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 7a-11  Find Your Zone >

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Anise is not winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

A new and distinctive selection from the Southern Living Plant Collection, 'Miss Scarlet' is a more compact form of Illicium floridanum (Florida Anise) that produces lots more flowers. The star-shape flowers, which some say looks more like an octopus, sit just atop the foliage in spring. Unlike it's larger cousin, which has pointed leaves, Miss Scarlett's leaves are rounded and densely packed on shrubs that grow about half the size of I. floridanum (5-6' tall and 4' wide). The anise-scented leaves are large and provide a tropical effect in the landscape. Miss Scarlet is performing just as well in our north-central Georgia gardens as the species.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing upright to 5-6 feet tall and 4 feet wide, 'Miss Scarlet' Anise is useful in the landscape as a specimen shrub or small tree, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sunny or shady areas of the garden. Also ideal for use in home foundation plantings to frame corners or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) between widely-spaced windows or on windowless walls.

Suggested Spacing:  3.5' for solid hedges;  7' or more for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

'Miss Scarlet' Anise is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. For best appearance and performance we recommend some shade in the afternoon. Maintenance is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch. That said, plants can be clipped to control height or to maintain as a hedge.
