Flame Grass
Miscanthus 'Purpurascens'

USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5a-9b  Find Your Zone

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Miscanthus grass variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Special Attributes

Miscanthus 'Purpurascens', commonly called Flame Grass, is prized for its blazing orange-red fall color. Growing in an upright clump 3 to 4 feet tall, it features green blades with a reddish tinge which gradually develop more reddish hues as summer progresses, eventually turning a brilliant orange-red in fall. By winter the foliage has turned to a handsome burgundy. Foliage gradually darkens to an attractive burgundy by winter. In late summer or early fall, purplish-red seed heads resembling wands rise just above the foliage, contrasting wonderfully with the brilliant, variegated leaves. In early fall these seed heads open to attractive fluffy flowers that persist through winter. The plumes are great for cutting and use in dried flower arrangements.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide, Flame Grass is ideal for use as a vertical accent in smaller garden spaces, home foundation plantings, and container gardens. In larger landscape spaces it is stunning in groupings or mass plantings. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens and Asian gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2.5 feet apart for groupings or mass plantings;  6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Miscanthus grasses are easy to grow in a wide range of soils, from sandy to well-drained clay and full to mostly sun (6 hours or more direct sunlight per day). They prefer a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility while establishing themselves, however will tolerate periods of dry soil when established. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, so make sure the planting site is a well-drained one. Maintenance is minimal requiring only an annual pruning before new growth begins to emerge in late winter or very early spring. At this time simply cut plants back to just above the ground.
