Erica x darleyensis 'Mediterranean Pink'

Special Attributes

'Mediterranean Pink' Winter heath is a pretty little winter-blooming evergreen sub-shrub with a mounding growth habit and dense foliage that is smothered by a profusion of pink bell-shaped flowers beginning from late fall or early winter all the way to early spring, at a time when not much else is blooming in the landscape. Its densely-packed leaves look like tiny needles, providing a unique texture all its own in the landscape, somewhat similar to Mexican heather.

Erica x darleyensis 'Mediterranean Pink' is a hybrid, its parents being Erica carnea, which is native to central Europe, and Erica erigena, which is native to Ireland. Erica carnea is native to central and southern Europe, Erica erigena to Ireland (which is why its common name is Irish heath). Very much like its parents, 'Mediterranean Pink' is also short, reaching a maximum height of about 1 foot tall and 2 feet wide at maturity.

Flowering time will vary depending on your location and the weather. In northern zones where it will grow, it might begin blooming as early as November with flowers persisting through mild winters. If there's lots of snow, flowers could be there into early spring.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Mediterranean Pink Winter Heath is a great choice for containers, rock and flower gardens, or as edging or ground cover in the landscape. When massed as a groundcover the foliage is dense enough to suppress weeds. Its smaller size fits perfectly in smaller garden spaces or containers that can be situated and enjoyed on patios, decks and porches. Provides abundant winter flower color in the landscape and in pink-themed color gardens.

Spacing:  18 inches apart for mass planting; 36 inches or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

Winter heaths are easy to grow when planted right and in the right environment. They prefer the same soil conditions as do azaleas and rhododendrons; moist but well-drained and acidic. Though a well-drained soil is needed, they like the ground to stay moist. That said, as with so many other types of ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Overly dry soil can be problematic as well. Provide occasional deep soakings during prolonged drought. To flower their best give winter heath full to mostly sun. Some shade or filtered sun during the  hottest part of summer afternoons will be appreciated in the warmer southern zones where they grow.
